History of 3 Card Poker
3 Card Poker is descended from a British game called Brag which originated about three hundred years ago. It was then called Primero and it was a fast moving betting game using only three cards. It is thought that the name "poker" derives from the German "pochen" which means "brag". Poker was originally called pochen in Germany and "poque" in French.
At any rate, to get back to the British, their game of Primero turned into "Post-and-Pair", and from there it became Brag. When the game traveled across the Atlantic, it was called Casino Brag or Brit-Brag but was then simplified to just 3 Card Poker.
There is a legend, you can believe it or not, relating that the name "3 Card Poker" derives from the old con card game, the "3 Card Monte" or "Find the Lady". But 3 Card Monte is not a serious gambling game. Rather, it is a con game created to diddle naïve players out of their money. And it is illegal. However, it is possible that this true or untrue story gives the game an additional, mysterious aura.
Pair Plus and Ante and Play in 3 Card Poker
In 3 Card Poker the player plays against the dealer and there is no opportunity to bluff which makes the game move faster but with less stress and tension. This is undoubtedly one reason that female players enjoy it more.
The game started with the "Pair Plus" option. The players place their bets on the table and then showed their cards. Any player with a pair or better collected the payout. However, to make the game more interesting, a second option was added called "Ante-and-Play". In this option, the player places an ante bet before receiving his cards. He then can fold and lose his bet, or raise by putting out a bet equal to the ante bet. The player wins if his hand is of higher value than the dealer's.

When online gambling took off in the mid-nineties, 3 Card Poker became an even more popular poker variation.
