How to Play Three Card Poker
Before playing 3 Card Poker, you should familiarize yourself with all the 3 Card Poker rules and know how to play a game of Three Card Poker.
The player and the dealer are each dealt three cards. Their bets must be made before the cards are dealt. There are designated places on the table for the Pair Plus bets and for the Ante bets. If a player wishes to play both games, he must place bets in both places.
Pair Plus
In "Pair Plus" winnings do not depend on the dealer's hand. To win a player must have a pair or better. If there is more than one player, each holder of a pair or better receives a payout. The payouts in the "Pair Plus" games are for specific combinations:
- Straight Flush pays 40:1
- 3 of a Kind pays 30:1
- Straight pays 6:1
- Flush pays 4:1
- Pair pays 1:1
Of course, if a player Folds (throws in his cards), he loses his bet no matter what the value of his hand.
Ante and Play
In the "Ante and Play" game, the player bets against the dealer. In this game the player is dealt three cards face up while the dealer gets three cards face down. If the player feels that his hand can beat the dealer's, he puts an additional bet, equal to his Ante bet, in the "Play" space.
The dealer must have a Queen high combination or better to qualify. If the dealer's hand does not qualify, the player is paid his “Play” bet and doubles his "Ante" bet, regardless of the value of his hand.
If the dealer's hand does qualify, the hand with the highest value wins, and the winnings are paid according to the Ante payout schedule which is 1:1 for both the "Ante" and "Play" bet.
Ante Bonus
The "Ante and Play" game also has "Ante Bonus" payouts for especially good combinations. These bonuses do not depend on the dealer's hand and are paid out to the player even though he may not have won the round.
The winning Ante Bonus payouts are as follows:
- Straight Flush with 5:1
- 3 of a Kind with 4:1
- Straight with 1:1
Again, if a player Folds he loses all his bets including the Ante Bonus payout.
Hand Rankings in Three Card Poker
It is important to remember the hand rankings in Three Card Poker because they are a bit different from other poker games. The hand rankings are as follows:
- Straight Flush – 3 cards of the same suit in sequence (difficult to achieve in Three Card Poker and, therefore, the highest hand)
- 3 of a Kind – 3 cards of the same denomination
- Straight – 3 cards from any suit in numberic sequence
- Flush – any 3 cards of the same suit
- Pair – any pair of cards with the same denomination plus any other card
- Ace High – a combination of an Ace and any other two cards
- King High – a combination of a King and any two cards with a lower value
- Queen High – a combination of a Queen and any two cards with a lower
How to Play Three Card Poker Best
There is no real strategy to the game of Three Card Poker, but it is good to remember three rules:
- Always play with a hand of queen, six, four or higher.
- Do not play with a hand that is lower than the above.
- Play both "Pair Plus" and "Ante and Play" together.
This combined play qualifies the player for the Ante Bonus payout which can make a big difference in his winnings.
